phpBB Group, is the name of the group maintains this forum system is formed by the community and their contributions, intending to promote free software.
It is also known for its numerous vulnerabilities that are parchadas a few days of being reported, perhaps in part due to its popularity, therefore is highly recommended to upgrade the version of phpBB with each package and new changes that appear to avoid having problems with the security of the Forum.
Currently, there are number of websites where you can create a forum in phpBB in just a few minutes, either by its stability or by its ease of use, it is the best-known Web forums system.
In 2005 many viruses spread massively by servers web using critical vulnerabilities in phpBB2 (old version) in 2006 still identify new vulnerabilities in phpBB. It is therefore the importance of maintaining each forum updated with the latest patches which draws the ‘ staff ‘, many of them immediately after detected the error.
13 December 2007 releases version 3.0 a.k.a. Olympus and that it puts an end to five years of development since version 2.0, which already it was announced the end of its support to 1 February 2009.
MODs
MOD (English modding) is created by the community of phpBB that adds new features or change the appearance of a forum. The abbreviation generally writes capitalized to differentiate it from the concept of Moderator. The modifications referred to in this way are not developed by the phpBB developers and do not enjoy the same level of support as the official version of the source code, without modifications.
PhpBB mod team is responsible for verifying that a MOD is appropriate and complies with the minimum standard proposed for its operation. After being accepted are released files in the MODs database (in English).
There are other sites that have mods for phpBB2 and phpBB3, which are based on its own standards, which are not included by the phpBB support. PhpBB3 MODding documentation is provided by the MOD Team.
Within best-known MODs is rapid response, systems of RPGs, reputation points, sections of games in Flash, utilities antispam, among others.
MODX
MODX is a format of XML document by the phpBB MOD Team (phpBB MODs team) used to describe the steps required to modify the source code of a web application to install a modification. Although that can be used for any web application in theory, it was developed and is used primarily to phpBB MODs. The phpBB MOD team requires all MODs for phpBB3 sent to your database meet the specifications of the latest version of MODX, although many other sites that store MODs do not require compliance with this. The main purpose of using an XML-based format is to allow installation tools automatically (see below) to read and complete installation instructions better. However, XML files can only be viewed in a web browser using an included XSL. The latest revision to MODX is 1.2.2, released January 25, 2009. Information on MODX can be found in modx resource Centre (in English).
AutoMOD
AutoMOD, currently in beta, is a tool developed by the phpBB MOD Team that analyzes and automatically installs MODs, which are in the format of MODX, in a phpBB3 Forum. Users only have to upload the contents of a MOD downloaded to the directory where is located the phpBB forum and run the AutoMOD, which analyse the MOD instructions and make the necessary changes. Depending on the configuration of the server, it will automatically make changes uploading them via FTP or will create a compressed file with the edited files that users upload. AutoMOD is also used by the mod team to verify if MODX files are correct and the MOD can be installed correctly on a pure installation of phpBB. The latest version of AutoMOD is 1.0.0-beta2, released January 25, 2009. AutoMOD can be downloaded from the AutoMOD information page (in English) and get support in the support forum (in English).
AutoMOD is the successor to EasyMOD, tool developed by the phpBB MOD Team and serving the same function.
Languages
A phpBB forum can be easily translated downloading a language pack from the official languages section and post in the folder ./phpBB/language/ of the Forum. Some languages are Spanish, English, Portuguese, French, Galician, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, among others. There are three varieties of Spanish: Spanish (of Spain), Argentine and Mexican.
Styles
They are templates with different colors, design and images built for each specific phpBB version. They are composed in the third generation of three sections: template, theme and image gallery. Style gives the characteristic touch to each forum and this may be related to the theme of the Forum. Installation is similar to the language pack and they can be edited in its completeness from the administrator panel.
History
phpBB was started by James Atkinson (now a member of the development team) as a simple forum similar to UBB for their own site staff on June 17, 2000. Nathan Coding and John Abela (both now former members of the team) joined the development after that phpBB’s CVS repository was moved to SourceForge.net, and worked at the start of version 1.0.0. A preliminary, fully functional version of phpBB was released in July of that year.
phpBB 1.0.0 was released on 9 December 2000 with subsequent improvements reflected in two important updates. The latest release in the 1.x branch was 1.4.4 released November 6, 2001. During the lifetime of this branch, Bart van Bragt, Paul S. Owen (former co-project manager), Jonathan Haase (ex-member of the team) and Frank Feingold joined the team. phpBB 1.x does not receive support from the phpBB teams, and virtually no longer websites that use.
phpBB 2.0. x began in February 2001. It was developed entirely from scratch; the ambitions of the phpBB developers had exceeded the original code. Doug Kelly (now a member of the team) joined the team later. A year of development and extensive testing, phpBB 2.0.0, called “Super furry”, was released on 4 April 2002, three days after the scheduled.
phpBB 3.0. x began in late 2002. It was originally intended to be released as phpBB 2.2, and the first version 2.2 feature list was announced on 25 May 2003. However, as development progressed, the developers noticed that phpBB 2.1. x (the cycle of development for 2.2) was virtually eliminated all compatibility with the 2.0 line. x, and therefore the version number changed to 3.0.0, according to the scheme of versioning of the Linux kernel. Since then, the development team has seen many internal changes and several changes to the code of phpBB3 were made. In September 2005, Paul Owen resigned the development team leader and was replaced by Meik role.
In March 2007, the phpBB teams had planned to make a round of maintenance on the server, but the server fell during electricity cuts, suffered a disk failure and causing phpBB.com website unavailable for the entire week (the phpBB teams indicated that phpBB, software, was not the cause of the fall). However, due to the cutting of electricity, teams decided to change their original plans and launch their new website, supported by phpBB3 and the new visual theme “proSilver”. This was a great surprise for the majority, as well as the visual theme that had been kept secret, without being shown before the public. Opinions were divided, with many supporting the new theme and others criticizing new design decisions, specifically the decision to show the user information to the right of the page view topic (phpBB2 theme “subSilver” showed it on the left).
April 30, 2007, the founder of phpBB and the co-project manager James Atkinson officially renounced its powers in phpBB, citing personal reasons. Also announced that phpBB would be completely independent and team leaders could take decisions on the future of the project together. At the end of may, a new ad reported that Jonathan was Stanley, Co-Chief project, also renounced for personal reasons.
July 7, 2007, the team announced that phpBB had been nominated as a finalist in the SourceForge.net Community Choice Awards in the category “Best project for communications”. End of the month, SourceForge.net announced that phpBB had won this category, and as a reward, SourceForge.net donated to Marie Curie Cancer Care the sum of $1000 in the name of phpBB.
September 6, 2007, the teams launched the Official phpBB Podcast. The podcast was recorded by a rotating group of phpBB Team members with occasional guests, and discussed a number of topics related to phpBB, as well as they answered questions submitted by listeners via e-mail.
The first beta of phpBB3 was released in June 2006 and the first release candidate was released in May 2007. The phpBB3 codebase received an external security audit in September, which was done by SektionEins. Finally, phpBB 3.0.0 “Olympus” (also called the Gold release) was published on 13 December 2007.
The teams launched a new blog about phpBB in July 2008. Blog will be maintained by phpBB Team members and report on various topics related to phpBB and provide users with a unique insight into the activities of the phpBB Team.
The phpBB teams held its first user conference that was called Londonvasion 2008 in London on 20 July 2008. She presented the team members of phpBB with several topics important to the community phpBB, authors of MOD (code changes) and developers. Londonvasion provided a unique opportunity for socializing between members of the phpBB teams. The event also represented the first time that most members of the teams had the opportunity to meet in person.
